National Poetry Day at Weatherhead

5 October 2023 | LRC, School News

We have been celebrating National Poetry Day today and all week in assemblies, in classrooms and in our Learning Resource Centre. The theme of National Poetry Day is Refuge and students have been asked to think about what the word means to them.

Students had the chance to take part in a lunchtime Poetry Slam in the LRC today, which was an opportunity for them to read poems they have written or poems they love to an audience. Students have learned about the power of poetry and watched performances by spoken word poets Vanessa Kisuule and Tony Walsh.

In addition to this, we have launched a search for a Weatherhead Poet Laureate. This is an opportunity for a student to represent our school community through poetry. They have to submit three original poems: one about the theme of Refuge; one called ‘Weatherhead’ and one on a topic of their choice.

Our Poet Laureate will write poems which celebrate our school community and events in our school calendar and also respond to national and international events and issues. You will see their poems published on our website and in school newsletters.

An application form can be picked up from Mrs Benazzouz in the English Office. Poems should be submitted by 3.15pm on Thursday 19th October. The name of our inaugural Poet Laureate will be announced the week beginning 30th October.
