Secondary School Librarian of the Year!
We are delighted to announce that Weatherhead’s Learning Resource Centre Manager, Miss Grainger, has been awarded ‘Secondary School Librarian of the Year’ at the 2024 School Library Association (SLA) annual awards ceremony, held on Wednesday, 2 October.
The SLA’s School Librarian of the Year Award recognises school library staff who work tirelessly to inspire a love of reading and learning among their students. The award aims to raise the profile of school librarians, helping others appreciate the value of their work and encouraging greater support for school libraries.
Miss Grainger impressed the SLA judges with her “forward-looking commitment, empathy, and enthusiasm” in a role she has held for over a decade. In addition to creating a library that students enjoy daily, Miss Grainger expanded Weatherhead’s annual Author Week event into an impressively diverse and inclusive celebration, linking every Key Stage 3 learner with an author talk or workshop. You can read more about ‘Weatherhead’s Lit Fest’ here. Miss Grainger’s drive to introduce a range of reading initiatives, including World Book Day celebrations, Harry Potter Nights, and Poetry Slams, has been wildly successful in establishing a culture of reading for pleasure. Her efforts to engage every child in the school, regardless of ability or background, were highly praised by the SLA judging panel.
Weatherhead’s library is open to students daily at break and lunchtime and after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 5.30pm (4.30 pm on Fridays).
