Arkwright Engineering Scholarship 2020

Year 12 student Sanjita has received the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, awarded to 300 aspiring young engineers.

The year-long scholarship application process, which involved an online application, an aptitude exam and a virtual interview, is designed to assess students’ engineering knowledge as well as other key life skills such as leadership and creative thinking. Sanjita received her award from Headteacher Miss Whelan (both pictured above), following the postponement of this year’s awards ceremony due to the coronavirus.

Sanjita studies A level Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Design Technology and will receive financial and mentoring support throughout her A-Levels as part of a drive to inspire future leaders in engineering. Scholars are selected for their potential as future engineering leaders by assessing their academic, practical and leadership skills in engineering disciplines.

The engineering industry has played an essential role in the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, from developing PPE for frontline workers to helping construct new hospitals. A diverse pipeline of future engineering talent will pave the way for greater innovation and help sustain the nation’s development and economic recovery through the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

With women currently accounting for just 22% of the STEM workforce, the Arkwright Engineering Programme aims to close the gender gap and support young people from all backgrounds with the skills and confidence to change the world through engineering.

The scholarships support students through their sixth form studies and encourage them into top universities or higher apprenticeships while offering access to a range of enrichment experiences such as industry conferences, Connect Days, mentoring, residential courses and university VIP days.
