Sports Awards Evening 2017
Former England international footballer, Sue Smith, joined Weatherhead staff, students and parents to celebrate the sporting achievements of our students at our 9th annual Sports Awards Evening.
The evening opened with a welcome from Head of PE, Mrs Crichton, and was followed by a dynamic and powerful display by Weatherhead’s Elite Gymnastics Squad and a speech by Sports Captain, Georgia Hepke.
The awards were presented by guest speaker and footballer, Sue Smith. Sue played for Tranmere Rovers for many years before signing to Leeds and, until recently, played for Doncaster Rovers Belles. Sue earned 93 caps for England, during her career, scoring on her debut in 1996 against Germany and has twice won the Nationwide International Player of the Year Award. Sue is now a regular on BBC and Sky TV and has worked with the BBC covering football at the Olympic Games.
Sue delivered a powerful and moving speech, detailing her sporting journey from school days, to representing England at international level. Sue talked about never giving up on dreams and how, despite her ambitions to play at Olympic and European level being hampered by injury, she continued to set and achieve many career goals.
The awards ceremony celebrated the dedication and teamwork demonstrated by our students, as they represented the school in local, regional and national competitions and in their many sporting achievements outside of school.
The awards ceremony also recognised sports leadership skills with awards for Active Playground Leader, Community Sports Coach, Junior Sportswoman of the Year, Team Captain of the Year and Sports Captain.
Team of the Year was awarded to the Gymnastics Squad for a successful season which saw them become National Finalists.
In total, 132 awards were presented to our students.
