Congratulations to Weatherhead alumna, Emily Beresford, one of 12 students shortlisted nationally for the 2018 Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year award.

This annual event showcases the very best students from the top drama and musical theatre schools across the UK. 35 schools entered the competition with 69 students performing for one of the 12 places in the final. The final takes place in London’s West End on June 10th 2018 at the prestigious Savoy Theatre.

The Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year has been running for many years and winners and finalists have gone on to have successful careers in the industry including Cynthia Erivo (2009) who went on to win a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and a 2017 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre (2009) and Taron Egerton (2011) who went on to star in comedy film The Kingsman.

Emily said: “I will be performing Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Don’t laugh’ from the musical ‘Hotspot’ alongside a non-Sondheim Song chosen from the Mercury Musical Development Songs list. I am excited to perform on stage in the West End representing my University The Hammond.”

Whilst at Weatherhead, Emily studied Drama at A level and played the role of ‘Nancy’ in the school production of ‘Oliver!’ Emily is now in the final year of a BA in Musical Theatre Performance at The Hammond University.

Good luck Emily for the finals on the 10th June.
